The long horizontal slats are held one above the other by the rungs of ladder cords shaped like a ladder. The lower ends of the legs of the ladder cords are secured to the long rail under the slats. As the drive rod rotates, one leg of each ladder cord moves up while the other moves down, causing the angle of the slats to change. In one design, this rotation is achieved by pushing up or pulling down on a long handle called a tilt wand connected to the drive rod by a lever. Lift cords along the ladder cords are also attached to the rail. They pass through holes in the slats and into the housing above, where they go over pulleys, combine and exit through the cord lock. For safety it’s important that the lock always work. A downward pull on the main lift cord raises the slats by the cords pulling up the rail below the slats. The cord lock holds the main lift cord to keep the slats up until the cord is pulled to release the lock. The safety lock made the cord lock easier to use.

In phase two of the campaign, the students distributed 300 T-shirts and 5,000 static cling decals with the phrase 2outta3. Finally, the entire Drug Treatment Center was revealed through the dissemination of 1,150 T-shirts and 5,000 silicone wrist bands with the Drug Treatment Center, 2outta3 Dont Drink. JTNN understood the needs of Nevadas Hispanic community in its fight against drug treatment center, specifically relating to drug rehab and methamphetamine. Having successfully built a Drug Treatment Center in the Reno area to reduce substance use, JTNN staff felt they could assist other communities in addressing their drug treatment center challenges by applying the lessons learned in establishing their successful effort in Reno. Through the DFC Mentoring drug rehab, JTNN recruited other established community Drug Treatment Centers and approached five Spanish-speaking communities with an offer to help them build community Drug Treatment Centers. The combined communities cover an area of 17,362 square miles. A total of 424,112 persons of Hispanic descent reside in this target area, more than 100,000 are under age 18. The Project Director works with each of the Drug Treatment Centers to set up individualized strategies to engage the Hispanic community.

The goal of the campaign is to inform youth and parents that the majority of teenagers in Upper Bucks choose not to drink. In fact, a survey of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders combined found that two out of three had not used drug rehab in the last 30 days. The social norms campaign addresses the reality that the majority of youth over estimate how many of their peers engage in underage drinking. The Drug Treatment Center recruited 65 youth from 3 high schools to form what they call the Street Team to help plan and implement the project. Additionally, local businesses donated services and products to the campaign.

Bush Allocates Over $90 Million to Fight Drug Abuse
The Administration supports many of these Drug Treatment Centers by providing $90 million in the FY 2008 Budget through the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) drug rehab. This drug rehab aims to mobilize key sectors of the community to work together toward a common goal of reducing youth substance use.
Each Drug Treatment Center funded through the DFC drug rehab identifies local problems and works with local leaders to develop and implement solutions unique to the problems identified in each community. As part of the qualification for DFC funding, each community must provide a dollar-for-dollar match to the $100,000/ year in Federal funds provided through DFC. This community-level commitment to drug prevention helps ensure sustainability of local prevention drug rehabming far beyond the 5-year Federal funding cycle.
As the result of an increase in community-wide environmental activities and changes within DFC communities, successful Drug Treatment Centers may now qualify to mentor new and emerging community groups to help them replicate the successes seen by existing DFC communities in reducing youth drug treatment center.

Neuropsychological testing is provided if the person is psychotic upon entry at drug court. We repeat testing when the psychosis subsides, and we perform a third scan with neuropsych tests after six months of sobriety. The subjects are placed on low-doses of the new anti-psychotic medication risperidone (Risperdal). This is our best chance to do follow-up evaluations. Is the methamphetamine psychosis persistent? What about the abnormal blood flow pattern? Judge Aiona’s drug court may help provide some answers to a frightening concern. In Honolulu’s emergency rooms or police cell blocks, it looks like Armageddon. We must bring more scientific research to bear on this problem.
DR. LUKAS: As a researcher, I have been trained to live and die by statistics, but we cannot lose sight of the real-life stories and the faces behind those statistics, graphs or charts. Like a broken record, I cannot overemphasize that point enough. Because there is no silver bullet for drug abuse, medication development and orange county orange county dual diagnosis rehab treatment research must proceed on many different fronts. This process goes on slowly, too slowly perhaps, indirectly contributing to an increase in the numbers. We must do better.
